|2008 GCA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE|
Thanks to all of those who attended the 2008 GCA Conference!
Held at the downtown Austin Radisson Hotel, the 2008 GCA International Conference was another roaring success. For the clubmakers who attended the conference, a preview of new clubhead models and the ever-changing technology in shafts and grips was presented so that professionals and hobbyists alike could obtain insider’s knowledge of new 2009 products.
Technical presentations from Golfsmith’s R&D staff and major shaft companies highlighted the first full day of the conference. Topics ranged from Golf Ball Fitting and Interchangeability to MOI Matching and the newest tools available for clubmakers. There was also an SST presentation on the latest PUREing technology that speeds up the process from eight minutes to just 30 seconds. This was followed up by a fun evening of blackjack, roulette, craps and slots at our annual Casino Night.
On Saturday, attendees visited Golfsmith's World Headquarters and were treated to a tour of our state-of-the-art Research and Development center and fitting lab. Demo day on the Golfsmith driving range allowed everyone to test Golfsmith's new Snake Eyes Python XLS Driver Head, Snake Eyes Viper XTI Driver Head and Snake Eyes Quick Strike Q4U Hybrid Head. Innovative graphite shaft manufacturers like True Temper, Graphite Design, UST, Aerotech, Grafalloy, Graphite Design and Aldila all participated and showed their latest technology to interested clubmakers, while Winn, Golf Pride and Zelocity also showed off their upcoming 2009 products.
The True Temper-sponsored awards banquet was on Saturday evening, at which Bob Boring was crowned 2008-2009 GCA Clubmaker of the Year, recognizing his dedication to advancing the craft and profession of custom club fitting, assembly and repair. Roy Tousley was this year’s winner of the Harvey Penick Award, which recognizes clubmakers who embody Penick’s values: friendliness, love of golf and golfers, and dedication to helping others play better.
Sunday concluded the conference’s technical presentations, followed by a late afternoon cocktail party before resting up for Monday's golf tournament at Falconhead Golf Club in the scenic Texas hill country. To everyone's relief, the weather was much nicer than last year. Congratulations to Ken Alterwitz, Bob Boring, Chris Hunt and Jeff Sheets on their win!
