If you were unable to attend this year’s Golf Clubmakers International Conference, you missed a lot of helpful information and an overall great time. The 19th annual event was held October 9-13 in downtown Austin, Texas, featuring presentations from Jeff Sheets and the R&D team on Golfsmith’s 2009 products, MOI matching, shaft/head interchangeable fittings, and much more. Companies such as True Temper, Aldila, UST, Graphite Design, Aerotech, Golf Pride and Winn had a chance to debut their new 2009 products at a Demo Day held on the driving range at Golfsmith’s 40-acre headquarters campus. The annual golf tournament was held at Falconhead Golf Club, a PGA Tour Design course.
The highlight for many clubmakers was the awards night held October 11. Carl Paul, Golfsmith’s founder, delivered an entertaining dinner speech. David Lowe, Golfsmith’s Vice President of Instruction and Proprietary Brands, served as master of ceremonies and handed out numerous awards to deserving clubmakers. The below individuals were on hand at the conference and received their awards at the banquet dinner.
—2008— Harvey Penick Award WinnerRoy Tousley
Named after the legendary golf teacher and best-selling author of “Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book,” the annual Harvey Penick Award recognizes a club fitter who embodies Penick’s values: friendliness, love of golf and golfers and dedication to helping others play better.
This year’s winner is Roy Tousley, owner of R&M Golfworks in Scottsdale, Ariz. The judges recognized his unrestrained enthusiasm for the profession, as well as his love of helping people.
As he put it to Clubmaker earlier this year, the secret to club fitting success is “a passion and concern and care for the individual you work with. ... We need to be good listeners first, to try to understand what their needs are, and then we’re always going to be able to bring someone into this great game happier.”
Please join us in congratulating Roy for his exemplary career.
—2008— Clubmaker of the Year Worldwide WinnerBob Boring
This year’s GCA Clubmaker of the Year is Bob Boring, owner of Tour Quality Golf in Overland Park, Kan. He wins a valuable prize package and the profession’s highest honor.
An expert panel chose Boring from among dozens of nominees, recognizing his dedication to advancing the craft and profession of custom club fitting, assembly and repair.
Boring has been repairing clubs since he was a teenager and now enjoys running his successful fitting shop near Kansas City, where he attracts business exclusively by way of golf pros’ referrals. He also works with university golf teams and the Kansas City Golf Association, and he occasionally appears on local sports talk radio, commenting on all things golf.
Congratulations, Bob!
