Garmin Approach G5 Touchscreen GPS

Give your game a boost of confidence with Approach G5, a rugged, waterproof, touchscreen golf GPS unit packed with thousands of preloaded US golf course maps. Approach uses a high-sensitivity GPS receiver to measure individual shot distances and show the exact yardage to fairways, hazards and greens. Approach displays and updates your exact position as you move, so you'll always know your yardage and can remove any guesswork from your game. There's no subscription or setup fees, and Approach is compliant with USGA rules.

Need to measure distances for your next shot? Touch any point on the sunlight-readable display, and Approach shows the precise distance to that exact spot — fairway, hazard, landing area, or the front, middle and back of the green. Getting on the green is also easy with Approach's Green View. Just tap the flag on the map to zoom in on the green — then drag the flag to position it where you see it, giving you more accurate yardage. Approach can also double as a digital scorecard for your foursome and after the game, you can save and review scores on your computer at home.

Features:

  • Preloaded US and Canada course maps, including fairways, hazards and greens
  • Waterproof
  • 3" sunlight readable touchscreen display
  • No annual fee

I bought this unit to replace both an iGolf and a skycaddie. Couldn't be happier. Every course we played in Florida was there, and so are the ones in Michigan we play. Connecting to satellites takes just a few seconds. AS some have stated, the screen washes out a bit in sun, but you can still easily see the yardage to the green. I bought a RAM mount cradle for the Garmin so I can use the cart mount I had with the SkyCaddie. I am always within 1 yard of the 150 marker on the course, and comparing buddies Celestron and Ugolf, the yardages are very accurate. I get 2 full rounds using Sanyo eneloop rechargeable batteries. Make sure you go into the menu and select the battery type you are using. That may explain why some people get less than 2 rounds with their unit. Am very happy with the unit.
Pros: Features, Quality, Easy to Use, Good Value, Durability

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Date:December 3, 2011
Good: This unit has a very user friendly stat accumulator along with providing individual golf club distance. No annual fees and no need for constant downloads allows users to take it anywhere with ease. The waterproof feature is a must considering that golfers will constantly deal with rain and wet grass. Garmin is also a well reputable company.
Bad: This unit eats batteries for breakfast. Not unusual for battery life to last one full round and half of the next round. Garmin should of incorporated a rechargeable battery for this unit.
Ugly: The graphics of golf courses appears to me drawn by children. It is unreal. Has to be the worse pictures of course layouts in the market. The pin placement feature would be a lot easier to use if the actual picture resembled the greens. The picture is also difficult to see in bright sunlight.
With all of that being said the unit is still very functional. Not the best, but definitely not the worse.

bought this in April and play most of my golf in the Northeast. The G5 is a fantastic addition to the golf bag, i have found it easy to read irrespective of the weather and never play without it. The additional features are really good if you are interested in tracking your game stats also. I use regular disposable batteries and change them after 4 rounds. Uploading new maps was also pretty straight forward.
