Cleveland CG16 Satin Chrome Conforming Wedge

The Cleveland CG16 Satin Chrome Conforming Wedge has a hint of offset and is slightly larger for added forgiveness, much like the Tour-proven Cleveland CG14. The face features the same spin-maximizing technology featured on the CG15— Tour Zip Grooves— in combination with Cleveland's breakthrough laser-milled surface roughness technology. Using the precision accuracy of a laser, each face features four perfectly calibrated texture lines milled between each groove exactly to the conforming roughness limit. This surface roughness application optimizes ball-to-face friction and maximizes spin within the rules of golf. The back of the wedge features a slight cavity back with an engineered undercut to move the center of gravity low and deep and increase the moment of intertia for added forgiveness on off-center strikes. The wider "C" shaped sole has constant width from heel to toe for improved bunker performance. However, a subtle "Tour grind" removing material from the heel and toe provides for versatile shot making from any lie or address position.

Additional Features:

  • Material: Steel
  • Manufacturing Process: Cast
  • Shaft: Cleveland True Temper
  • USGA-conforming grooves

Feel and Forgiveness
Date:July 31, 2011
I've been playing Callaway forged and Vokey wedges the past few years. Due to limited practice time, I added more user friendly wedges to the bag. I purchased the Ping Tour S wedges and love them for bag number 1. For bag number two, I got the CG16 sand wedge to compliment my Spin Milled lobber. The CG16 has the large face and forgiveness of the CG14 with better appearance and feel. 431 stainless is not as soft as carbon steel but softer than 17-4 stainless. Hence feedback wise, it is an intermediate between the Vokey and Ping. Not the greatest spin, but that is mostly due the the conforming grooves (noticed the same loss of spin with the new Vokeys). A fun easy to hit wedge that provides a good amount of feel and feedback. Maybe I'll add a 60/08 in the future.

Excellent Gap Wedge
Date:June 1, 2011
I purchased this club as a 50 degree gap wedge, and it is perfectly suited for this purpose. The cavity back adds that extra forgiveness needed/desired for a gap wedge, but when chipping, the cavity is neither visible nor does it encumber around the green performance. The club has great spin, remains workable (in that height of shot is easily adjusted), and looks very traditional at address. To me, these are the main objectives of any wedge, which the CG16 meets and exceeds, in that it adds full swing forgiveness. This club replaces my old 588 RTG gap wedge, and it is a welcome addition to my bag, which also includes a CG15 54 degree sand and Titlist Vokey SM 58.08 lob wedge. As to the chrome finish over black pearl, the chrome looks great, and is satin enough that sun glare is not an issue. I personally chose the chrome for two reasons: (1) because it is predominantly used as a gap wedge, the chrome matched better with my iron set; (2) my lob wedge is rusted, the sand wedge black pearl, and with this in chrome, it is very easy to grab the correct wedge without really looking in the bag. As an aside, having played both Vokey and Cleveland wedges, my preference is the Cleveland wedges as the additional head weight created additional playability for me, especially around the greens.
