TaylorMade Burner Driver
2009 Hot List Item

Three elements in the TaylorMade Burner Driver combine to help you send those tee shots long and straight down the middle.

First, next-generation Dual Crown technology lowers the CG (center of gravity) location, creating high launch and low spin. Then, TaylorMade's Inverted cone technology delivers a super-stable, high MOI (moment of inertia) clubhead design for increased forgiveness on off-center hits, sending them longer and straighter. Finally, a SuperFast shaft enables explosive swing speed for even more blazing distance.

I've had this driver for 8 months and could never really square it up. I thought I was the problem---well, kinda was. I bought the 9.5* w/ the stiff flex shaft. The extra 1.25" in shaft length---in addition to the fact that it is a bit whippy for a stiff flex---made this a balloon machine for me. The kick point wasn't ideal for me either. It flew the ball too high. I play a fade most of the time, and I averaged 240-245 off the tees with this club---with a few that measured about 265. I'm not a big hitter. But, I knew I wasn't carrying the ball as far as I should have been.
I should have cut the shaft an inch or replaced it altogether to gain some accuracy. I hated the feel of choking up on a driver. However, I lost the little confidence I had in this club and had to move on. I just replaced my Burner with a used TM R9 TP w/ a fujikura motore f1 65 shaft. I have it set neutral and am driving the ball straight or with a 5 yard fade. I have tons more control over my ball flight. I've also raised my average drive to 250-255 yards now that I am not launching the ball so high. I drove a couple today that were around 265 yards (my previous long). I swing at about 85-90%, so I'm sure I'll be getting some up to 270-275 soon.
At the end of the day, the club was not a good fit for me. My R9/fuji combo is more my speed. I'm playing more FIR's and taking fewer drops off the right side.
Pros: Quality, Good Value, Durability
Cons: Difficult to Use, Poor Design

I have been using the Tour Burner irons for some time but have experimented with other fairway woods and drivers. I finally ended up with the Burner rescue highbrids (4 & 5), the 5 and 3 woods and now the Burner driver. I am conviinced that this line of clubs is consistently the easiest to hit and most confidence inspiring of anything I have tried. I am learning to shape my shots with these woods and driver and since adding them to my bag I managed to shoot my lowest score ever! They won't fix a flaw in a golf swing but they are an excellent line of journeyman quality clubs that should suit the average golfer for many years.
Pros: Quality, Easy to Use, Good Value
