Ping S55 4-PW Iron Set with Steel Shafts - Black Dot

The Tour-style blade Ping S55 Iron Set, with stronger lofts, provides added distance with control while increasing workability for shaping shots. The 17-4 stainless steel heads feature a tungsten toe weight to enhance forgiveness and a vertical stabilizing bar for precise distance control. Lofts are strengthened to add distance (1° in the Pitching Wedge, 1/2° in the 6-Iron, then progressively less through the 3-Iron, where there's no change).

A Tungsten Toe Weight enhances forgiveness:

S55 Toe Weight

The vertical stabilizing bar is narrower in the long irons and wider in the short irons to soften the feel and optimize the CG position in each club. The CG is a little lower throughout the set, with the wedge being slightly more forward and the 3-iron's CG slightly farther back relative to the S56. As a result, wedge shots will be lower and more penetrating while long-iron shots will launch higher.

A Stabilizing Bar fine tunes launch angles throughout the set:

The low-profile custom tuning port (CTP) has changed from a thermoplastic urethane to a thermoplastic elastomer that absorbs vibrations, resulting in a softer feel at impact. The CTP is larger and sits deeper in the sole to optimize the center of gravity (CG) for improving launch conditions. A thinner face helps increase ball speed for added distance.

The Custom Tuning Port absorbs vibrations and optimizes the center of gravity:

Thin top lines, a compact head (slightly smaller than the S56), simplified cavity, and a brushed satin-chrome finish create a clean, confidence-inspiring design. Ping's CFS steel shaft (Control, Feel, Stability) comes standard, offering a mid-high launch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by 3 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Cast versus Forged The typical disadvantages of cast irons are they lack feel, they are harder to maneuver and they are harder to bend and adjust. The advantage of cast clubs is that they offer more forgiveness across the face and they are generally longer. Because of that I typically only played forged clubs to take advantage of the feel, fitting adjustments, and workability. However, when looking for something more forgiving I decided to test out the Ping line of clubs. I was not concerned about limited adjustability typically associated with cast clubs due to the fact that Ping has one of the more extensive club fitting options in golf. I tested the G30, i25 and S55 irons extensively. The G30 long irons were very nice and easy to hit. However, the short irons were not as consistent in distance and very difficult to work. They were also the shorter of the three, howbeit they were definitely more forgiving across the face of the club. For me, the i25 was longer than the G30, maybe because the center of the face was easier for me to hit versus the wider face of the G30. For me, the S55 was longer than the G30 and the i25. It also gave me the most consistent distance and flight pattern. I was surprised at how easy it was to slightly work the ball as needed, but at the same time hit routine straight shots. The feel of the S55 was identical to forged blades when struck well. In fact, the S55 actually felt better than some of the previous forged clubs I have hit. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase of the S55 irons. I now have the forgiveness of a cast club along with the feel and workability of a forged club. When you add Ping's extensive fitting system I lost nothing in moving into these irons from a forged blade. I'm looking forward to some lower scores. June 27, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Don't be scared off by the blade I have been playing golf for 40 years - these are by far the easiest clubs to hit I have ever owned. I have run the gammet of cavity back and game improvement clubs and I have found the HOLY GRAIL - I love these things - great feel, great distance, and believe it or not incredibly forgiving. Played two rounds with them on two of the most difficult courses in the Metroplex and both times I have shot below my handicap - these things instill confidence and give me feedback I haven't experienced in years - only wish they were forged instead of cast but not sure forged would provide the forgivemess these do. If you want a thin top lione with a classic blade look at address these are the sticks for you - I won't be swapping irons for a long time - by the way, hit the new Xhot 2's today - Ping destroys them - and I like Callaway Products - why these aren't more popular is beyond me - don't pass them by thinking you need game improvement irons - this set is the WHOLE PACKAGE!! Rated 5 out of 5 by Blades with forgiveness I have played Mizunos for years and they are great clubs. I hit these clubs and was amazed at the distance and accuracy that they produce. Simply amazing...I bought a set and have been shooting the lowest rounds of my life. January 3, 2014
