This new shaft is the answer to the oversize high moment of inertia (MOI) drivers.
"Players favor the high MOI drivers because of the clubhead's ability to resist rotating about a given axis when the ball is struck some distance from that axis", said John Oldenburg, Aldila's Vice President Engineering/Product Development. "The higher the mass MOI (mMOI) of a body, the less it will spin due to a given applied off center (off axis) load. Simply put, miss the sweet spot and the head doesn't rotate as much, hence the ball goes straighter. This is absolutely awesome if you're a golfer but not so hot if you're a golf shaft."
The problem for the typical shaft occurred in the creation of high MOI drivers. Designers increased the mMOI, increased the clubhead size and set the head center of gravity far back and low in the head. All of these design techniques created a lot of unwanted movement of the clubhead during the golfer's swing while placing more load and strain on the golf shaft.
To help counteract these unwanted loading effects caused by high MOI heads, Aldila increased the area MOI (aMOI) of the shaft. Increasing the aMOI increases the stiffness. The increased stiffness helps negate the effects of the increased loading from the modern clubheads.
