How to Choose Tennis String

Reducing String Vibration

When you purchase a racquet, it will probably come with a little rubber piece called a vibration dampener. They vary in shape and size - some are small and round, others long and skinny.

Vibration dampeners should be placed at the bottom of the string bed, between the main (up-and-down) strings and outside the cross strings. (The ITF Rules of Tennis, in fact, prohibit vibration dampeners from being placed inside the cross strings.) Vibration dampeners are easy to install, and they help reduce the string vibration caused by the ball's impact. They also eliminate the ping you hear when the ball strikes the strings, though dampeners also slightly deaden the sensation of the ball hitting the strings.
